How to change an audiobook voice halfway through

You can change an audiobook voice midway, but the new voice requires a new audio version. Your position belongs to your profile, while saved offline audio stays on the device. Before continuing, check your place in the book, the selected voice and which version is actually available without a connection.

Note your place before switching

Stop playback and note the chapter and last recognisable phrase. Your position is saved in your profile, but a brief note makes the result easier to check. Avoid force-closing the app while changing settings, and do not play the same book on another device at the same time.

For example, write down the chapter title and a few words from the next sentence. This is a personal reference rather than a separate TGRadio bookmark. If you need to return manually, those words help you recognise the right passage.

Select the voice and start preparation

Change the voice or model in settings, return to the book and press Play. The new selection requires new audio; changing a setting does not transform an existing recording into another voice. You can listen from the first ready fragment without waiting for the entire book.

Further fragments are prepared as you listen. Do not assume that selecting a voice automatically processes the rest of the book in the background. If you only want faster or slower speech, adjust playback speed instead. Speed is a separate control and does not require speech to be generated again.

Check the voice and starting point

Listen to several sentences after starting playback. Compare them with your written reference and check the selected voice and model in settings. If you hear what seems to be the previous version, first confirm that you opened the intended book and another tab is not still playing.

A pause does not necessarily mean your position was lost: the new version needs audio preparation. There is no guaranteed preparation time. If playback begins somewhere unexpected, locate the intended passage using the chapter and content before settling into a longer session.

Prepare the intended version for offline use

Do not assume an older local download updates automatically after a voice change. Check the new version while connected first. Then use Save chapter offline or Save book offline and inspect the result in the Offline library on the same device.

Save book offline prepares missing fragments, downloads them, and saves them on the current device while connected. Wait for completion without errors or cancellation and ensure enough storage is available. Before travelling, check the next chapter specifically and play its saved opening without a connection to confirm the voice.

Keep a working copy until you have checked

If you need the previous version while travelling, keep it until you have checked the new offline version. Do not sign out or clear browser storage as a way to switch voices: those actions remove local audio. Another device needs its own saved fragments.

Preparing audio with a new voice and listening again are free, with no monthly character allowance for narration. Technical storage limits still apply. If space is insufficient, decide which local material you still need, then repeat the save and playback check for the selected chapter.
