Book narration reads the contents list: remove a duplicate

If book narration reads a contents list before the first chapter, check whether that list is part of the book’s text. You can remove a confirmed duplicate from a permitted copy outside TGRadio. First distinguish the inserted list from navigation and actual chapter headings so that useful structure stays intact.

Locate the list being read aloud

Compare what you hear with the beginning of the source file. A textual contents list typically presents several chapter titles in succession, sometimes with page numbers, before a preface or first chapter begins. For example, “Arrival 7, The Letter 19, Departure 34” resembles a contents list.

Check that the passage is not part of the narrative or a deliberate list written by the author. The heading “Contents” alone does not establish the deletion boundaries. Identify the list’s first and last lines and the independent section that follows before editing.

Separate text from navigation

An EPUB can contain both navigation for jumping between chapters and a separate contents page within the book. Seeing a list in a reading app does not prove that it is included in the narrated text. TGRadio reads EPUB content in spine order and uses headings from internal HTML files.

For FB2, inspect the top-level sections of the main body. In TXT, a contents list is simply ordinary text lines. Avoid deleting EPUB navigation data by guesswork. Find the actual text block that matches the sequence of chapter titles you heard.

Remove one verified text block

Create a copy you have the right to edit and open it in a suitable external editor. In TXT, select only the list and its associated heading. Preserve the beginning of the next section and its paragraph separation so that unrelated passages do not become joined together.

For EPUB or FB2, use an editor that preserves the format’s structure. For example, a page may contain both a contents list and an introductory note from the author, so deleting the whole page would remove useful material. TGRadio has no built-in editor or contents-skipping switch.

Preserve the real chapter headings

After removing the list, search for its titles in the main text. Confirm that every necessary heading remains before its chapter. Do not delete all matching occurrences: a contents entry usually repeats a genuine chapter heading that still serves a purpose.

Check for lists belonging to individual parts as well. A book may have a general contents list at the beginning and additional lists before major sections. Assess each separately. A page number beside a title is a useful clue, but it is not sufficient evidence for deletion.

Check the transition into the book

Reopen the saved copy and read the passages on either side of the deletion. Confirm that the preface, first chapter heading and opening paragraph remain intact. Then import the file into TGRadio, choose the book and voice, and press Play to start audio preparation.

When the opening is available, listen to the transition into the main text. If the list still repeats, return to the source and look for a second textual contents block. Compare it with what you heard before deleting anything else; it may belong to a different part of the book.
