Strange symbols in an ebook: how to find the cause
If strange symbols appear in an ebook, compare the same paragraph in the reader and after copying it into a plain text editor. This helps you investigate encoding, scan recognition, or font display. Prepare clean text outside TGRadio: the service does not automatically repair these errors and has no built-in text editor.
Run a short test on one paragraph
Keep the original book and create a working copy. Choose a paragraph with ordinary words, a name, and a number. Copy it into a plain text editor and compare it with the displayed page. A small sample is easier to inspect than a whole converted book.
For example, use “Anna returned at 18:00.” Check the name, digits, and spaces, then repeat elsewhere. One correct paragraph does not rule out errors in other chapters, especially in a book assembled from several sources.
Look for an encoding mismatch
If most Cyrillic letters become recurring sequences of unusual characters while Latin letters and numbers remain readable, encoding may be the cause. For TXT, reopen the unchanged source with an explicitly selected encoding. Save as UTF-8 only after the wording becomes meaningful.
Do not rename an EPUB or FB2 to TXT for this test. Request a corrected edition or prepare a separate text file in an external application. Format conversion alone cannot guarantee recovery of characters already damaged in the source.
Distinguish OCR mistakes from decoding problems
Recognition errors can leave most text readable while replacing individual letters, joining words, or leaving line-end hyphens inside sentences. For example, the letter “O” may become the digit “0”. Compare suspicious passages with an image of the original page.
A replacement character such as “”, or a question mark in place of a letter, does not identify one specific cause. Information may already have been lost during an earlier conversion. Do not replace every occurrence with the same letter. Recover words from the original or obtain a better source; TGRadio does not perform OCR.
Separate font display from damaged text
If the reader shows boxes but the copied paragraph is readable, a font display problem is possible. Open the working copy in another local reader, or select another font if available. Compare the same passage rather than just the cover.
If the strange symbols persist when pasted into different editors, changing the font will usually not resolve them. For PDFs, check word order too: visually correct pages can yield incorrect extracted text. Changing the voice cannot repair that sequence.
Correct the source and test difficult passages
Correct confirmed errors externally, checking against the original. Test bulk replacements on a copy because a similar character may be correct elsewhere. Save, close, and reopen the prepared file, then reread the edited passages.
After importing into TGRadio, select the book and voice and press Play. Listen to the corrected passage and its neighboring sentence. A correctly spelled word that sounds unexpected presents a separate pronunciation issue; the application has no built-in pronunciation editor or SSML controls.
